Jesus the Magician
was the title of a great book by Morton Smith that explored the earliest historical references to Jesus Christ, which identified him as a sorcerer, whose holy name was used by other sorcerers during magical invocations.
This discovery.com article reveals that the earliest known reference to Jesus, on a piece of pottery dated between 2 BC and 1 AD, describes Jesus as a magician:
The full engraving on the bowl reads, “DIA CHRSTOU O GOISTAIS,” which has been interpreted by the excavation team to mean either, “by Christ the magician” or, “the magician by Christ.”
